A basic production sound kit does not need to be complicated. With a portable mixer/recorder, shotgun microphone, boom pole, XLR cable, wired headphones, and an SD card, you can record usable dialogue almost anywhere. This guide explains what each piece of equipment does and how they work together.

Portable Audio Mixer/Recorder (Field Recorder)

The portable audio mixer/recorder, often called a field recorder, is the center of a production sound kit. Every microphone connects to it, and it records the audio onto an SD card or other compatible media. Most professional field recorders can capture several microphones at once, with each microphone saved as its own separate track. This allows the editor to adjust or repair each recording individually during post-production.

A mixer/recorder also lets the sound mixer combine those individual microphones into a basic stereo mix. This mix can be monitored through headphones, recorded as a reference track, or sent to a camera and other people on set. Although there are devices that only mix or only record, production sound mixers generally need a portable device capable of doing both.

Shotgun Microphone

A shotgun microphone is a highly directional microphone designed to capture sound coming from the area in front of it while reducing sound arriving from the sides and back. On a film set, it is commonly placed above or below the actors, just outside the camera’s frame. The goal is to position the microphone as close to the person speaking as possible without allowing it to appear in the shot.

Despite its name, a shotgun microphone does not capture sound from a great distance like a camera zoom lens. It still needs to be placed relatively close to the subject to record clear, natural dialogue. Many professional shotgun microphones are condenser microphones that require phantom power from the mixer/recorder, so the correct input settings must be activated before they will work.

Boom Pole with Shock Mount

A boom pole is an extendable pole that allows a boom operator to position the shotgun microphone close to the actors while remaining outside the camera’s frame. Professional microphones usually use XLR connections because they are secure, durable, and designed to carry balanced audio. A balanced connection helps reduce electrical interference and unwanted noise, especially when the audio signal must travel through a longer cable.

XLR cables can also carry phantom power from the mixer/recorder to a compatible microphone. Because the cable carries both power and audio, a damaged or poorly made cable can cause several problems, including crackling, distortion, intermittent audio, or a complete loss of signal. A reliable production sound kit should include good-quality cables of various lengths as well as at least one spare.

Wired Headphones

Wired headphones allow the sound mixer to hear exactly what the microphones and recorder are capturing. They make it possible to notice problems that may not be obvious to anyone else on set, such as clothing rustle, handling noise, background machinery, electrical interference, distortion, or an actor becoming difficult to understand. Monitoring through headphones is necessary because seeing movement on an audio meter does not guarantee that the recording sounds good.

Closed-back headphones are usually the best choice for production sound because they help block outside noise and prevent the headphone audio from leaking into the microphones. Bluetooth headphones are not recommended because wireless transmission introduces a slight delay. That delay can cause the mixer to hear the real sound first and the monitored sound shortly afterward, making dialogue difficult and uncomfortable to monitor accurately.

Recording Media (SD Cards)

Recording media is where the mixer/recorder stores every audio file created during production. Many portable recorders use SD cards, although the exact type, capacity, and speed requirements vary between devices. It is important to use media that has been tested or approved by the recorder’s manufacturer because an unreliable card could create recording errors or cause valuable audio files to be lost.

Before a production, the card should be formatted inside the recorder rather than on a computer whenever possible. The mixer should also confirm that enough recording space is available and that the recorder is saving files to the correct location. Recording media may be one of the smallest and least expensive parts of the kit, but it is responsible for preserving all of the work completed on set so it’s important to have multiple quality cards available at all times.
